holly needs to know asked:

i clean my rabbit cage out every night(i just change its bedding). i just want a animal that is easier to handle, pick up and hold. i am going to make my rabbit a out side bunny and was thinking of getting a guinea pig (maybe two). will i have to clean the cage every night.i know i read weekly but can’t you smell it in your house? are they less smelly? i think its the pee that really has a smell. has anyone out their ever owned both of these types of animals and can give me the low down?i need help.

All small mammals smell to some extent. They’re pooping and peeing in a confined area. Rabbit pee seems stronger to me than guinea pig pee though. Guinea pigs aren’t going to be somehow more cuddly than a rabbit. Rabbits are nicer to pet than they are. Maybe what you want is a dog or cat, but they’re more work to care for than a small mammal. But there’s not a stinky cage sitting in your room either.

I have 3 rabbits in my home right now and none of them smell. Their cages are spotless. My company can’t even smell them, ever.

You can’t just clean out the bedding and not rinse/wash the cage. The urine deposits and fecal deposits need to be washed away. The amonia buildup can make your rabbits sick. Try hot water and vinegar, rinse out well and dry out the cage before replacing the bedding.

If rabbits are smelling the way you guys are saying, then I suggest you try something different as far as the upkeep of the cage/bedding goes. Rabbits only stink when not being taken care of properly. And, it’s not fair to DITCH your rabbit for another animal.

The corner most of the time as you surely will be able to clean her cage out everynight then you change them once or twice week will be able to clean her.
The time as you clean her cage atleast twice week will keep it smell free.
